Top Secret Ways To Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions in 2017

From all of us at AfmobiBlog, we wish you a Happy New Year! 2017 is here. It’s that time of year again where we all think about what we would do this year. Some of us have gotten into the tradition of writing resolutions. Simply because everyone else does it. Others do it because of personal goals to be fulfilled. Whatever your reason, your resolutions are your resolutions. It could be you want to lose a 100 pounds this year or learn a software. It could be to coach the Little League team or to be a better dresser. Resolutions are always of different types and categories.

But, have you ever wondered WHO started New Year Resolutions or WHY? Have you ever thought about the types of resolutions people make?  Or even what exactly we get from writing New Year resolutions? In this article, I will be giving you a top secret reason why you should stick to your New Year Resolutions and even if you are yet to write or make any, you really should.

It turns out that the early Romans started this in 153 BC. That’s a very long time ago. They believed in Janus, a god with two faces- one face was used to look back on the past and the other forward toward the future. Just imagine someone with a face facing forward and the other facing backward…hmm.

Anyways, on every New Year’s Eve, the Romans imagined Janus looking backward into the old year and forward into the New Year. So, every December 31st became a time for Romans to forgive their enemies for wrongs done to them in the past year. It also became a time for them to make resolutions for the New Year.

And that was how the tradition was started.

Cool, right?

A New Year’s Resolution is a promise. A promise you make to yourself for the coming year. It is a goal and commitment to make yourself better.

A New Year’s Resolution is of different types. You could make a resolution to start exercising more. Or it could be that you want to read 100 books in the next year. It could also be a goal or promise to start a vlog or blog. It could even be to tutor teens or to stop a bad habit. Resolutions, I think, come in different shapes and possibly sizes. It depends on what you want and a bit on who you are.

But, we’re here now. Why do we make New Year resolutions? It’s not like most of us ever keep them. We create lists, but we don’t do the lists. And we do this every year. Year after year, New Year’s Eve after New Year’s Eve. For some, it is very easy to write and carry out. For the rest of us, not so easy.

But my advice for you this year is to make New Year Resolutions that will help you become a better version of you than you were in 2016. You need to embrace the change that comes with the New Year, roll with it and make lifestyle changes that are to your benefit.

So, why should you make and stick to your New Year Resolutions in 2017? I only have ONE top secret reason and this is…

You can’t afford to be static in life. There’s this saying we’re all familiar with, “the only constant thing in life is change”. Change is almost always good and change is to be expected in every aspect of life. Change is why you were once a baby but you’re now an adult. Change is the reason why you always want to learn new skills or software to keep up with the times. Keeping up with the times is change. The life you live is so dynamic that something new comes up every other day. You need to be a better version of you in 2017. This is a top reason why you need to make New Year Resolutions and to stick with them in 2017.

So, you might be thinking, “how do I stick to my New Year Resolutions after I make them”? Well, it’s super simple.

I use these acronyms…acronyms that we are all most likely familiar with. S.M.A.R.T. Keep your New Year Resolutions S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely).

The truth is whatever goals you set for yourself in this year must be Specific. The goals you set for yourself should not be generalistic. They should be geared at fulfilling, changing or growing at something. For instance, instead of saying “I will exercise this year”, why don’t you note it as “I will do 50 squats everyday” or “I will skip rope 200 times everyday”. Make your New Year’s Resolutions S-pecific.

Whatever goals you set for yourself in the New Year must be goals that can easily be achieved within the space of 12 months or even less. Your resolutions must be such that you can achieve within a little or average space of time. This means they (your resolutions) must be measurable and attainable. Set goals that will not become difficult for you to continue or achieve after a short while. If possible, break down your goals so that they look and feel less difficult to attain.

“Realistic, your goals must be” (in Yoda’s voice). Your goals for 2017 must be realistic. Let’s just say you set a goal for yourself in 2017 and that goal is for you to grow wings in your back and fly. OK, we both know that isn’t realistic in any way. A more realistic goal would be to go bungee jumping, skydiving, going on a roller-coaster or any other activity that means you would have your feet off the ground. Let your New Year’s Resolutions be based and grounded in reality.

Timeliness is also very important in making and sticking to your New Year’s Resolutions. Your goals must be achievable within the 12 months we have in 2017. And, within those 12 months, it is important you set a defined timeframe to achieve your goals. You must also stick to those set timeframes. All your goals must be S.M.A.R.T.

After doing all this, youcan review them periodically to know which milestones you have achieved and ways that you can use to achieve those resolutions you are yet to achieve.

As JB Glossinger also noted in his article on resolutions and how to keep them, your New Year resolutions for 2017 must be kept super simple. He also asked this question, “Is your New Year’s resolution list as long as your holiday grocery list? If so, we’ve got to eliminate the majority of your list – at least for now”. So, try as much as you can to keep your goals simple, smart, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.

I wish you a splendid 2017 and I pray all your dreams come true this year.
